West Ham knock the reigning EFL Cup champions Manchester City out of the competition

Manchester City are knocked out of the EFL Cup competition for the first time since the 16/17 season after losing to West Ham United on Penalties. 

After neither team managed to break the deadlock in the regulation time the game went to the penalties. Phil Foden was the only City taker who failed to convert his spot-kick. On the other hand, the Hammers managed to find the back of the net on all of their five attempts. 

The Citizens’ were the dominant force throughout the game as Guardiola’s side had 64% of the ball possession and made 653 passes. The defending champion had 25 attempts in the game and only seven of them were on targets. But, the Hammers keeper Alphonso Areola stood tall and denied City from scoring. 

Following this defeat, City’s chance of winning five consecutive league cup trophies has come to an end. After winning 21 ties and remaining undefeated in 1826 days in this competition, Guardiola’s side have encountered their first defeat. 

West Ham United have now eliminated both the Manchester clubs from this competition. They are looking to go all the way and win the trophy for the first time in the club’s history. 

Manchester City knocked out of EFL Cup by West Ham:

After eliminating from this competition by West Ham, Manchester City will be able to focus on bigger prizes like Premier League and Champions League. 

Following the emergence of Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel. The race for the league title has become more fierce this season with Liverpool already in contention. 

Having won three league titles under Pep Guardiola. Manchester City will be looking to go all the way this term in the Champions League after falling short in the final last season to Chelsea.
