Chennaiyin FC sign Johnson Mathews

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Johnson Mathews will join the Chennaiyin FC squad that will start their Indian Super League campaign in 3 weeks time. The versatile winger has come a long way to play in the biggest league in the country. He was a part of Hyderabad FC last season and will take a step up by joining Chennaiyin FC.

2-time champions Chennaiyin FC were far from their best last season. They finished a disappointing 8th in a league of 11 teams. They won just 3 games out of 20 and scored the least number of goals in the entire league (17). This meant that they had to change a couple of things before the next season.

One of the most important changes was the appointment of a new coach. Bozidar Bandovic took to the wheel and got to work immediately much to the excitement of the fans. The former coach of Olympiacos was previously at Buriram United (Thailand). He had a very fruitful stint at the club by securing 2 league cups while breaking the record for the maximum points achieved in a season.

Johnson Mathews can live up to his potential at Chennaiyin FC

Johnson started his journey as a young lad playing for Mumbai FC in the junior national leagues. The now-defunct I-League club gave him the chance to represent them in the U-15 I-League. He then moved to PIFA FC for whom he played in the U-18 I-League. His performances secured him a place in the Maharashtra squad of the prestigious Santosh trophy.

The journey has only gone upwards ever since as he represented the now-defunct ISL club Pune City FC’s, U-18 team. His heroic caught the eyes of Hyderabad FC and the ISL team signed him in 2019.

At 20, Johnson has a long way to go. Chennaiyin FC have had players like Lallianzuala Chhangte, Rahim Ali, Jerry Lalrinzuala and Anirudh Thapa who broke into the main picture during their time at Chennaiyin FC. With a mindset to get better and the right approach, Johnson will be a name for the future.
