About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

The Spanish Maestro Xabi Alonso is tipped to become the manager of Borussia Monchengladbach as per reports. Many clubs have shown interest in him, but Monchengladbach is the only club that has shown serious interest.

Xabi Alonso is a player who has been decorated immensely. He had a successful career at 3 of the greatest clubs, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. At these clubs, he was managed by the best in the business.

Monchengladbach’s coach, Marco Rose is set to leave the club to join Borussia Dortmund as the new head coach after Lucien Favre was sacked by the club.

Borussia Monchengladbach had a fine season last year after landing a spot in the top 4 of the Bundesliga. They are currently 10th in the league. They were completely outplayed by Manchester City in the Champions League which saw them bow out in the round of 16.

Xabi Alonso’s career in a nutshell:

He made his professional debut 2 decades ago for the club he is currently managing. Alonso had a decent time at the La Liga club with over 120 appearances in 5 years. He didn’t win any silverware, but attracted a lot of attention with his talent.

He joined English side Liverpool in 2004 and had the perfect start to his career there. In his first season itself, he became lucky to lift the Champions League trophy. He made 210 appearances which were his most among all the clubs.

By the time he joined Real Madrid, he was already one of the best midfielders in the world. Xabi Alonso penned a 5-year contract in which he won another Champions League trophy along with his first League title. He further won 3 more trophies to end his career for Los Blancos.

The Spaniard joined Bayern Munich when he was 33 years old. He had signed a 2-year contract which further got extended by 2 more. He won the Bundesliga title every year for the 3 years he played there. Having won 2 more trophies with the Bavarians, he hung up his boot alongside his teammate Philip Lahm.

Following his retirement, he started his coaching career as he took over Real Madrid’s U-14 side. In 2019, he joined Real Sociedad. In his first year, he guided his team close to the playoffs..

Is Xabi Alonso really going to join Monchengladbach?

Earlier this week, the reports suggested that Xabi Alonso would be taking over Monchengladbach in the coming season. But in the latest turn of events, reports from Germany suggest that he is not going to be their manager.

It is said that the club has made contact with the player, but no final deal has been struck. This means that Borussia Monchengladbach will be looking for other managers in the meantime.

“I only found out about that from the media. I won’t believe it until the club officially announces it. Now it has been denied again. [Gladbach sporting director] Max Eberl will certainly make an excellent choice.” – Florian Neuhaus on the current confusion.
