According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona loanee Sergino Dest is on the watch list of Bundesliga club Union Berlin as the summer transfer window approaches. Union Berlin will compete in the UEFA Champions League next season after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga. They are also aiming to strengthen their lineup in the summer, with Dest surfacing as a possible target.
Barcelona Right back Sergino Dest will leave the club this summer
Last month, rumours in Germany suggested that Union Berlin were close to finalising a loan agreement with the player, which would become official at the end of the season. However, according to the most recent information, Barcelona does not desire to loan out the USMNT international. Instead, the Blaugrana are eager to get rid of him permanently in order to improve their Financial Fair Play status.
Dest, who joined Barça from AFC Ajax in 2020, never really got going. And, after falling out of favour under Xavi Hernandez during the 2021/22 season, he was loaned out to AC Milan last summer.
The right-back’s tenure in Italy has been nothing short of a disaster. He only had 14 appearances for Stefano Pioli’s side across all competitions. Milan had the chance to sign Dest on a permanent basis. But he will return to Barcelona before likely being transferred to another team. Barcelona is in severe need of a new right-back this summer. They have spent the season with Jules Kounde as a temporary operator in the position.
USMNT Right back agrees personal terms with Union Berlin
Sergino Dest is under contract with the Catalan club until 2025. Due to the club’s complicated financial circumstances, they would prefer a permanent move that would allow them to obtain a fee for his transfer. It is uncertain whether the German club would be willing to pay a transfer fee for Dest. However they might desire a loan agreement with a buy option, as AC Milan did in 2022. In addition, according to German media, the player has already accepted personal terms with the club for a July transfer.
However, there is little possibility that Dest will continue at the club and get a second chance to prove himself under Xavi. Union Berlin is pushing for his signature, but it remains to be seen if they are willing to pay to sign him permanently.
