Barcelona have only a few days remaining in the transfer window. The club have to sort out a lot of departures from the club. They have to find solutions for players like Braithwaite, Depay, and Aubameyang. It is quite likely that these players will be leaving in the upcoming days. But one player’s future is in a totally confused phase than others. The player wants to stay but the coach does not want him. That player is former Ajax man Sergino Dest. Dest was left out of the squad for Barcelona’s first 2 matches.
The reason for his snub has not been disclosed but it is likely to be a technical decision. It is clear that Xavi is not counting on Dest for the upcoming season. He feels that the club needs to sign a quality right back before going into the season. There is no right back currently at the club that can offer offensive support. But Xavi’s system needs a right back to be as good on the ball as the player will be off it. Ronald Araujo can be deployed as a defensive right back but the same cannot be said about his offense.
Sergi Roberto is much more of a defensive liability due to his lack of pace. This made the club reconsider their options. There are a lot of names that were in discussion by the staff in the last week. But no contacts were made to the respective clubs. The club is currently thinking about loaning out Sergino Dest for the rest of the season and bringing in a replacement. No club has come in with an offer for Dest, so a loan agreement will be best for both parties. Dest wants to stay and prove but it is highly unlikely that he will play again for the club.
Manchester United in the place for Dest?
Manchester United are now going big in the transfer market. As far as transfers are concerned, they are one of the clubs that have brought in a lot of players. Antony is the newest member of Ten Hag’s squad. Eriksen, Malacia, Martinez have also come in this season. But reports say Ten Hag still wants a quality right back at the club. Aaron Wan Bissaka is surplus to requirements at the club. This has revived United’s interest in Dest. Erik Ten Hag is a big fan of the player, having managed him in his Ajax days.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the Red Devil’s interest in Dest.
“There were contacts on Tuesday evening between Barcelona and Manchester United for Sergino Dest. Dest is out of their project at Barcelona. The board wants him out. At the moment, it’s over for Dest at Barcelona and they’re trying to find a solution. First, Wan Bisakka’s future will get some direction and then the club will pursue Dest.”
