Barcelona VP Eduard Romeu reflects on Alemany’s departure

Romeu says the Villans made an offer that Alemany simply couldn’t refuse.

“Mateu could not say no,” he said.

“They put an astronomical salary on the table. And, on top of that, they give him a blank chequebook. It’s very hard to say no.”

In addition to complimenting Alemany, the Barcelona manager acknowledged how much the Catalan superpowers will miss him.

“Mateu is a phenomenon. He has done a great job. I got along very well (with him). I don’t understand football at all, but he used to speak my language. (His departure) is very bad news for us,” he added.

“I would like to be able to offer him a blank cheque, although the regulations wouldn’t allow us. In the Premier League, they are more flexible. I am convinced that he will create a team that will make a big splash.”

Although Deco is a potential replacement, Blaugrana has not yet announced who would take Alemany’s post. The sporting director of FC Barcelona, Mateo Alemany, has promised Barcelona president Joan Laporta that he won’t make any changes to Xavi Hernandez’s team when Aston Villa’s squad is set for the upcoming season. Alemany has given assurance to Joan Laporta that he won’t sign any players from Barcelona. He is doing these out of respect for the team he has worked for. He is still in charge of Barcelona with his contract expiring on June 30. Even though his contract was initially expiring in 2024, he still commits himself to Barcelona until the remainder of the current campaign.
