Bayern Munich target Gavi turned 18 on August 5th. Yet the young midfielder has taken the world by surprise. His rise through the academy ranks into a permanent fixture in the first team has been phenomenal, to say the least. In this regard, one has to pay respect to Koeman. Koeman got many things wrong, yet his insistence to bet on the young talents coming through the prestigious academy changed the direction of the current squad. It was his audacious decision to give Gavi a chance to impress. And Gavi did impress.
Gavi is one of a kind. He is technical on the ball. His innate aggressive nature is quite evident when he makes tackles and wins the ball back. He is the perfect midfielder that Barcelona could have hoped for. He is now a regular starter for Xavi.
Bayern Munich was desperate to sign Gavi
Gavi has always reciprocated his feelings and loyalty towards Barcelona. However, his contract was to expire in 2023, and the renewal talks were not heading in the right direction. Early reports suggested that the board was waiting for him to turn 18 in order to renew him with a more extended contract. Later it was reported that a host of top European clubs. Bayern Munich was one of them. Bayern made an effort to sign him as they contacted his agent. The other clubs were Liverpool and PSG.
Barcelona will be much relieved now since he signed his contract. The official confirmation came just a day before Barcelona faced Bayern in the Champions League. The new contract is valid until 2026 with a staggering one billion euros release clause.
The young Spanish talent would look to dominate the midfield position along with fellow national teammate Pedri. This would greatly help Barcelona and his case for a call in the Spain national team squad ahead of the World Cup in November.
