Benzema and Real Madrid create history

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Real Madrid defied all odds last season as they lifted the Champions League for a record 14th time. Los Blancos had an absolute roller coaster ride on the way to the UCL title. Nobody had expected a Real Madrid squad with no Ronaldo to live in the Champions league and rule Europe. But they really proved why they are called the kings of Europe. The historical club made even more history as they also clinched the La Liga title in style. Karim Benzema was the top scorer in La Liga as well as the Champions League as he had a stellar season.

Karim Benzema was hands down the best player in the world last season. The Frenchman seemed to be on a level that nobody could reach last season. He was scoring goals for fun against the likes of PSG, Chelsea, and Manchester City. It was him who was the deciding factor in almost every knockout game for Real Madrid. It is no doubt that the Ballon D’or would have justice done to it only if Benzema lifts it this time. And sure enough, Benzema has lifted the Ballon d’or 2022 on 15th October and created history.

It was a stellar season that ended in the best possible way for Benzema and Real Madrid. Benzema was handed the Ballon d’Or by none other than his former manager Zinedine Zidane.

I am like an older brother to Benzema, that’s what we like very well to call each other. He calls me my older brother and I call him: my little brother.”

Benzema has particularly called this award the People’s award. There could not have been a more deserving winner of the Ballon d’Or 2022. It was possibly one of the best individual seasons a player could have.

‘Benzema was the Maguire of Real Madrid in 2017’

These days, memes and funny stuff has taken over social media like a storm. Many of them have now resurfaced that were pretty much about how Benzema was not at Real Madrid’s level. It was at the end of a frustrating 2017-18 campaign when he had the lowest goal tally. Fans did not hide back that season calling him the ‘ Harry Maguire of Real Madrid ‘.

Some fans were astonished to see how he turned his situation around. Others comically predicted Harry Maguire to win the Ballon d’Or for the season 2027. This era of memes and social media has surely made football more interesting but it can also sometimes have a toll on players.
