Borussia Dortmund can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Their superstar centre-forward Erling Haaland hints at staying at the club in the next season.
Haaland is one of the most sought-after footballers on the planet at the moment. At just 20, he is already among the best strikers in the world. He is the top scorer in Champions League this season, with his 10 goals for Borussia Dortmund.
All the top clubs in Europe are eager to sign Haaland including the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid to name a few. However, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has made it clear that the Norwegian will not be sold this season.
THE GOALSCORING MACHINE
Haaland took over the football world like a storm when he scored 9 goals in a single match in the FIFA 2019 U-20 World Cup. He made his name in the Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg, where he became the first teenager to score in five consecutive UEFA Champions League matches. Borussia Dortmund acted fast as they secured his signature.
In Dortmund, Haaland continued his blistering form, scoring a hattrick on his debut. He ended that campaign in Bundesliga with 13 goals from 15 appearances. In his first full season with Dortmund, the Norwegian have scored 27 times in Bundesliga in just 28 appearances.
He also scored 10 Champions League goals for Dortmund in the season and ended as the competitions top scorer. This also took his total tally in the competition to 20 and made him the fastest player to score 20 goals, taking only 14 appearances. The 20-year-old was awarded the Golden Boy award in 2020 for his impressive performance.
HAALAND CLEAR ON DORTMUND FUTURE
This ability and hunger to score goals rightfully attracted interest from many top clubs. However, Haaland seems to have ended speculation in his latest interview with Viaplay. The Norwegian said that he wanted to respect the contract that he has with Dortmund.
“Well I have a contract for a couple of years, so I am respectful towards my contract.” – said Haaland.
A big factor for Haaland’s stay was Dortmunds qualification for the Champions League. The Norwegian admitted that securing the UCL spot was important for his decision to stay. He also expressed his happiness in winning his first major trophy and said he wanted to win more. Haaland scored a brace in the DFB Pokal final to help Dortmund to win the cup competition.
For Haaland, his national team Norway did not qualify for the upcoming UEFA EURO 2020. This means that he will not busy in the summer as he will take his well-earned time off. With his future at Dortmund almost certain, the 20-year-old will be back next season to score more goals and break more records.
