Celtic wants this 2nd division defender from league 1

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Celtic is keen on landing the Senegalese defender Amadou Mbengue from Metz after the French side was relegated from League 1.

Celtic F.C’s current scenario

The Bhoys have lost Tom Rogic this season and are on the verge of seeing Nir Bitton’s exit. In other words, the Scots are looking for a replacement.

The club manager Ange Postecoglou boasts a good quality midfield but losing their star players should assure disappointment. As a result, the club is looking to sign players in the upcoming transfer window.

Amadou Mbengue leaving Metz

After the club faced an embarrassing relegation to League 2, Celtic has shown interest in the Senegalese defender. Mbengue seemed to be the perfect match to empower the Bhoys’ defense line in the Celtic Park.

According to the Foot Mercato, the defender’s contract with the French side expires on the 30th of June. The player doesn’t seem so motivated to play in France after relegation and wants to leave.

Mbengue must make a significant choice about his career this June, especially given that Metz will undoubtedly strive to protect him.

Udinese joins the race too

Celtic isn’t the only club targeting Mbengue. Serie A contestants Udinese has also been interested to get the 20-year-old’s signature.

The player is versatile enough to play as an anchorman in spite of being a center-back. This quality drew the Italians’ attention to sign him at all costs.

Is Mbengue worth buying?

Mbengue doesn’t seem like the kind of player Celtic could hesitate to use, but being inexperienced at the top standard may pose some concerns. He hasn’t yet completed a full season of matches for the French and has only started 12 times.

Why are the Bhoys still pushing?

Celtic saw a phase of unsuccessful transactions intended to create a side for the future. But very few of them actually succeeded. Long-term success was out of reach for individuals like Luca Connell, and, Vakoun Bayo.

Conclusion

Finally, it all hinges on the role Postecoglou envisions him playing. It will be challenging to expect him to wear one of the center-back shirts the following summer. What if it’s in the role of an anchorman?  That position is absolutely necessary for the Hoops, and it may present him with some options.

For the time being, he is simply an additional member on the absurdly long list of people whose names have been connected to the Bhoys for the next season.
