Coach Profile Part 1: Manolo Marquez Roca

Marquez provides a plethora of knowledge to the team with a football career spanning eight years as a player and then nearly two decades as a coach.

Manolo Marquez Roca, as Manuel is often called, has extensive knowledge of running clubs throughout Spain. With the Spanish team AE Prat in the fourth level, he started his professional coaching career in 2003. Marquez joined CF Badalona in the Segunda Division ‘B’ in 2010 after spending six years in the Tercera Division.

He spent a season in charge of the club’s reserves in 2013 while working for Catalan powerhouse RCD Espanyol. Roca was hired as the head coach of Las Palmas’ La Liga main team’s reserve squad for the 2016–17 season. And after a full season, he was elevated to that position.

Roca’s past experience

He joined NK Istra 1961 of Croatia’s first league in 2018, his first time ever leaving Spain, however after just one victory in seven games, the club requested him to leave. Roca afterwards switched to Ratchaburi Mitr Phol F.C. in Thailand’s premier league. Roca left the Indian Super League (ISL) team to become the new fitness coach for Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona. The former Bengaluru FC coach joined Hyderabad in January 2020, however he didn’t officially take over the team until the 2019–20 campaign was over. The Spanish player had committed to Hyderabad for two years, but after Barcelona, both sides opted to amicably end the agreement.

Hyderabad under Marquez recorded their best-ever performance. In terms of points last season after placing sixth in 2020–21 and second in 2021–22. Then in 2021–2022, he also assisted them in capturing their first ISL trophy. In addition to the accomplishments, he was responsible for the club’s development of Indian players. And over the course of three years result in 10 HFC first team members had a call up from the Indian national team.
