Memphis Depay looks set to leave Barcelona this season. The Dutchman wants playing time and Xavi has cleared him that he would not get much game time. It is quite a harsh thing to digest for Depay, given he joined the Catalans last season only. The Dutchman was the top scorer for Barcelona last season as the Catalans managed to get 2nd place finish. Koeman stressed upon Depay’s signing in 2021. The Dutch coach made sure Luis Suarez left and Depay would come in.
But it is not easy to play for a club with the stature of Barcelona. Barcelona this season are back in the transfer window and have picked up superstars. The arrival of Aubameyang and Lewandowski had made matters worse for Depay. He is no longer a starter under Xavi as the coach informed him to look for a new club. Depay’s quality is undoubtedly very high and it would not be long until he gets a new club. Premier League clubs have considered the possibility to sign Depay.
2 Premier League clubs have offered to make Depay their highest-paid player. The 2 clubs are Crystal Palace and Fulham. But it is quite sure that Depay would consider leaving Camp Nou only if a top club offers for him. West Ham United are also considering moving for Depay as David Moyes is a big fan of the player. But once again Depay wants to play Champions League football which none of the aforementioned clubs offer.
What if Aubameyang and Depay both leave?
Barcelona have made it clear that they want to have one of Aubameyang and Depay to stay. Xavi prefers Aubameyang and has communicated this to the player. This led to Depay being the surplus at Camp Nou and reconsidering his future. He looks set to leave but the real problem would be if Aubameyang would also leave. Chelsea have identified him as their number one choice for the striker. Thomas Tuchel would love to have Aubameyang in London.
But a transfer such as this would not be easy. Barcelona values Aubameyang very highly and would want the particular transfer fee to be paid. But even after that, Xavi is not at all willing to let Aubameyang leave under any circumstances. The squad looks to be complete and Xavi would not like it to be altered. Barcelona will have Lewandowski as their starter and Aubameyang as their backup. This may just tempt Pierre for him, away from the Blaugranas.
