Borussia Dortmund ended an amazing week by securing Champions League qualification for the next season. This came after their 1-3 away victory over FSV Mainz.

Dortmund, who won the DFB Pokal on Thursday added more joy by ensuring the qualification. This was also thanks to their competition Eintracht Frankfurt dropping points in their match against Schalke.

MAINZ 1-3 BORUSSIA DORTMUND

The latest victory against Mainz saw Dortmund dominating from the start. Fresh from their DFB Pokal success, the Black and Yellows didn’t look hungover. They went ahead in the 23rd minute when their left-back scored. Dortmund went ahead right before the end of the first half when Captain Marco Reus scored in the 42nd minute.

The game was put out of reach as Julian Brandt came off the bench to score his 3rd goal of the campaign. Mainz did get a consolation when they were awarded a penalty when Thorgan Hazard was penalized for a handball. Robin Quaison converted the penalty for the home side.

The performance from Dortmund, showed their recent attitude as they bossed their opponents. Jadon Sancho was again monumental for them as he assisted Dortmund’s first 2 goals. This took his tally of assist to double figures, further highlighting his importance. Haaland, though couldn’t score a goal of his own, helped by assisting Brandt.

DORTMUND’S RENAISSANCE

Dortmund went into the Bundesliga match in the back of an excellent run of form. The DFB Pokal winners have been on a winning streak in Bundesliga. They have not dropped any points in their last 6 matches in the league. In this amazing run, they have scored 17 goals, blowing away the likes of RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg.

This upturn in form came after their loss against Frankfurt. This loss left them fifth in the league table, 7 points away from 4th place Frankfurt. From then on the team galvanized into a strong unit as they went on the winning streak. The return of Jadon Sancho after injury and the uptick in Captain Marco Reus’s form was vital for their strong end to the season.

Dortmund can finally breathe a sigh of relief as they have wrestled back a Champions League qualification. This also meant that the club won’t be forced to sell its major assets. No Champions League next season could have made it difficult for them to keep the likes of Haaland and Sancho.

The DFB Pokal, Champions League qualification, and the amazing form at the tail end of the season will help in laying a foundation for the next season. They can however be relaxed when they take on Bayer Leverkusen in the final game week of Bundesliga this Saturday.
