Borussia Dortmund to host a farewell match for their players

Borussia Dortmund is planning to host a farewell match featuring their 2011/12 double-winning team and the current team. The club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed the new plan and wants to host it in the summer of 2022.

Dortmund ended their season on a high last weekend. They went on a 7 matching winning streak in the league to qualify for the Champions League. They added silverware to the season when they beat RB Leipzig in the final to win DFB Pokal.

HONOURING THE LEGENDS

The Black and Yellows finished the season with departures from their club. The ever-present right-back Lukasz Piszczek bid farewell to them on their last match against Bayer Leverkusen. He was joined by their former player Sven Bender, who also retired playing his last match for Leverkusen. However, the club could not provide them with a proper send-off in front of their fans, as COVID restrictions meant that fans were not allowed inside the stadium.

Club hence decided to conduct a farewell match in front of their supporters at the Signal Iduna Park. The match will feature the team that won the iconic double in the 2011/12 season and the current squad. Both Piszczek and Bender were part of the 2011/12 team. The farewell match to be held in the summer of 2022 will coincide with the 10th anniversary of their historic double victory.

“It is our wish that the professional team plays against the 2012 double-winning team in the summer of 2022. I hope that can be implemented. We would like to say goodbye to all these players in front of our fans.”– said Watzke to WAZ.

The Borussia Dortmund that won the double in 2011/12 featured some of the best players in the club history like Roman Weidenfeller, Marcel Schmelzer, Sebastian Kehl, Mats Hummels, Kevin Grobkreutz, Shinji Kagawa, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Ilkay Gündogan, Lucas Barrios, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski. The team was managed by the current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Fans are excited with the news as they will get a chance to say farewell to their heroes and also watch their legends play for them once again. No dates have been provided as the plan is still in its initial stage.
