Ex-Barcelona right back Dest to leave the club permanently in summer

Sergio Dest

Barcelona must sell several assets during the upcoming summer. This is to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and register new players for the upcoming season. It is crucial for Barcelona to offload players who are not in line with manager Xavi Hernandez’s plans. One such player who appears to have no future for the Catalans is right-back Sergino Dest.

The USMNT player is currently on loan at AC Milan. He is due to return to Barcelona in the summer as it seems unlikely that AC Milan will exercise the €20 million purchase option on him. As per SPORT, despite his uncertain future at Barcelona, there is no shortage of suitors for Dest. As four La Liga clubs are reportedly keen on signing him in the upcoming window.

Dest has reportedly caught the attention of Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, and Villarreal. They are willing to take a chance on him despite his limited role at Milan this season. Dest’s playing time has been limited this season. He has only featured in only 14 games across all competitions for Italian champions AC Milan. He was even excluded from their UEFA Champions League squad last month.

Spanish clubs expressing interest in Dest making it favorable for Barcelona

Despite his struggles at Milan, it appears that Dest is still in demand in Spain, with four clubs showing interest in acquiring him in the upcoming summer. In addition to the La Liga clubs, an undisclosed MLS team has expressed interest in signing the right-back. But it is unlikely to be a viable option for both the player and Barcelona.

Barcelona’s primary objective would be to recoup the €20 million they spent on acquiring Dest in 2020 and utilize the funds to reinforce the team.

Barcelona is still focused on signing a new right-back. Villarreal’s Juan Foyth is a top priority for the La Liga leaders. Therefore, there is a chance that they could use Dest as a bargaining chip to secure the Argentine’s signing in the upcoming summer.

It seems evident that Dest’s future lies away from Italy, and he is not a part of Xavi’s plans for Barcelona upon his return. Thus making a permanent departure in the upcoming transfer window highly probable.
