With a 3-0 victory against ATK Mohun Bagan, Jamshedpur FC became the first side to secure a semi-final position in the Hero Super Cup 2023. On Friday, the EMS Stadium in Kozhikode hosted a Group C match. As a result of the consequence, both the Mariners and FC Goa, eliminated.

After a performance of excellent counter-attacking football, Jamshedpur FC cruised over the Hero ISL champions thanks to a Boris Singh brace (21′, 41′) and a late Harry Sawyer strike (90+3′).

ATK Mohun Bagan opened the game on the front foot, confining Jamshedpur FC in their own half, but Aidy Boothroyd’s squad absorbed the early pressure and gradually began to threaten the Mariners on the break.

In the ninth minute, Vishal Kaith made a fantastic stop to keep Ritwik Das’ attempt wide. For Juan Ferrando’s players, it served as a warning because they once more exposed in the 21st minute. The Red Miners took the lead when the ball found Rafael Crivellaro’s foot, who then fed an eager Boris for a tap-in at the far post.

Four minutes later, ATK Mohun Bagan almost surrendered again when Vishal Kaith, who rushed off his line to clear the ball, missed his kick, but Pritam Kotal was there to make a goal-line clearing and maintain the score at 1-0.

In the 36th minute, Daniel Chima Chukwu’s goal was called out for offside, but it only took Jamshedpur FC five minutes to increase their advantage when Ritwik managed to slip in behind the ATK Mohun Bagan defenders and lay it on a plate for Boris, who complied for the second time on the night.

The Red Miners grabbed a 2-0 lead into the halftime break and deserved it

Ferrando’s men came out with a lot more purpose in the second half, but they found it difficult to find chances against a determined Jamshedpur FC backline. Chukwu then had a free-kick chance to score a third, but his looping header went wide just after the hour mark.

ATK Mohun Bagan then came within seven minutes of reducing the lead as Asish Rai’s brilliant cross almost found his colleague, only for Jamshedpur FC to scramble it away.

Sawyer then put the cherry on top for the Red Miners with a third goal that ended the Mariners’ challenge and secured his club a spot in the semi-final.

In the last group encounter, Jamshedpur FC will meet hosts Gokulam Kerala. While ATK Mohun Bagan and FC Goa will compete for dignity.

FC Goa’s late victory goes in vain

Iker Guarrotxena’s late victory against Gokulam Kerala earlier in the day had kept FC Goa’s hopes alive before Jamshedpur FC eliminated them with a win against ATK Mohun Bagan.

When Noah Sadaoui broke beyond Gokulam’s backline, he appeared to secure the late victory, but Shibin Raj stopped his effort. The rebound dropped fortunately for the opportunistic Iker Guarrotxena, who tucked in his 13th goal of the season from close range before the team participated in the celebrations with Brandon Fernandes’ jersey, since the captain was absent due to personal reasons.
