After a tough fight in the group stage, Messi and co defeated France on penalties to lift the World Cup for Argentina after 36 years. Lionel Messi was definitely the pioneer as he scored in all knockout games and produced absolute brilliance from time to time. The footballing world saw probably the best final ever in World Cup history which ended in a 3-3 draw. Argentina emerged victorious at penalties 4-2 which makes it their 3rd World Cup to date.

Lionel Messi has officially broken the record of German great Lothar Matthaus. Messi outbested Lothar’s record of 25 matches played by playing at the final which was his 26th appearance.

Lionel Messi is the first footballer to score in the group stage as well as all the knockout matches. Messi scored 1 goal each versus Saudi, and Mexico in the group stage. He further scored 1 against Australia, Netherlands, and Croatia after scoring 2 in the final. Kylian Mbappe on the other hand won the golden boot with 8 goals surpassing Messi’s 7. Mbappe also scored a hat trick at the final and he is the 2nd player to do so.

3. First ever 2 time Golden Ball winner

Lionel Messi is the only one to have won the Golden Ball 2 times, one in 2014 and the other in 2022.

4. Most player of the match awards

Messi has 11 players of the match awards for his name, 5 of which came from his recent campaign in Qatar. His 5 player of the match awards at a single world cup is also a record held by none.

5. Most goals contribution

Messi has now an overall 21 goals contribution throughout his 5 World Cups which is also a record held by none.

6. First ever to provide an assist at 5 World Cups

Lionel Messi only one to register an assist in 5 World Cups: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022. Ronaldo on the other hand has scored a goal in 5 World Cups which is a world record.

7. Most World Cup goals for Argentina

Lionel Messi is the only one to score 13 goals for Argentina outbesting Batistuta’s 10.
