He further scored 1 against Australia, Netherlands, and Croatia after scoring 2 in the final. Kylian Mbappe on the other hand won the golden boot with 8 goals surpassing Messi’s 7. Mbappe also scored a hat trick at the final and he is the 2nd player to do so.

3. First ever 2 time Golden Ball winner

Lionel Messi is the only one to have won the Golden Ball 2 times, one in 2014 and the other in 2022.

4. Most player of the match awards

Messi has 11 players of the match awards for his name, 5 of which came from his recent campaign in Qatar. His 5 player of the match awards at a single world cup is also a record held by none.

5. Most goals contribution

Messi has now an overall 21 goals contribution throughout his 5 World Cups which is also a record held by none.

6. First ever to provide an assist at 5 World Cups

Lionel Messi only one to register an assist in 5 World Cups: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022. Ronaldo on the other hand has scored a goal in 5 World Cups which is a world record.

7. Most World Cup goals for Argentina

Lionel Messi is the only one to score 13 goals for Argentina outbesting Batistuta’s 10.
