Lionel Messi might leave PSG after World Cup win changed his outlook

Despite speculation over his future at Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi admits “everything changed” after Argentina’s World Cup win. After attending the World Cup in Qatar, he delayed making a decision until after he returned from the tournament. Since returning home, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner appears to have changed his mind.

After Messi’s current contract expires, there are growing fears in the PSG management that he could depart. He does not directly address his club’s future in his latest comments, but he admits that his crowning moment in Qatar changed his perspective.

While speaking to an outlet, Messi said:

“I always thank God. I knew he was going to give me a World Cup, I don’t know, I felt it. Luckily he gave himself what we dreamed of so much. Luckily it happened in the end. From that day everything changed for me. Now we can say it.”

Next possible destination for Lionel Messi

Messi is believed to have achieved one major trophy that he had not been able to win for so long and believes he is no longer required to prove anything. He may end up playing in either his home country or the MLS, with Inter Miami particularly interested.

The forward is also rumored to be considering a return to Barcelona two years after leaving. In a recent report, Marca reports how the Catalan giants are desperate to resign their best-ever player, but their problematic financial situation stands in their way.

No matter where Messi goes, he will have to take a substantial pay cut. Even Inter Miami cannot afford the kind of wages he is currently earning at PSG.

In February, Miami co-owner Jorge Mas mentioned the possibility of a deal:

“Leo Messi is still one of the best players in the world, his skills have not diminished. I believe, and David has a relationship with him, that if he leaves PSG, at the time he leaves PSG we would love to have Messi as a player at Inter Miami and be part of our community. Can it happen? We will push. I’m an optimist at heart – can I see it happening? It’s a possibility.”
