Lionel Messi is without a doubt the greatest player ever seen. The Argentine has been the best player on the planet for more than a decade. Barcelona was and will always be his home no matter what. His contract with the Catalans ran out. Barcelona were not able to renew their King’s contract due to FFP. Joining PSG was deemed to be the best move for the Parisians. However, Last year was not the most fruitful for Messi and PSG as they were humiliated in the UCL by Real Madrid. Messi had a disappointing season hitting his lowest-ever goal tally but still racking up the numbers in assists.
But this season things look to take a big turn. Messi has started the season in fine form. PSG are looking in ruthless form with Mbappe, Neymar, and Messi leading the line. The Parisians have strengthened themselves in various positions this summer. It is finally looking like they can be worthy winners of the Champions League. But still, things look worrying for Galtier and PSG as he has 3 super influential figures in the dressing room. Mbappe has never seen eye to eye with either Messi or Neymar. It is the ego of the 23-year-old that might just come back and haunt PSG.
Pundits and players across the globe have given their views on this PSG team winning the Champions League with Messi.
“He’s not the same player as he was. And one thing is very clear, he’s not the captain, he’s not the leader. So he has a lesser influence in the side that is from a psychological and leadership point of view. And for him, the thing is when he decides to make an impact, and he has done that, the past will pay for the second goal.”
Can PSG get European Success this time?
PSG have a front three than can torment defenses as and when they like. On paper, a team with Mbappe, Neymar, and Messi in the attack should win every major title. But that is not the case. Lionel Messi is 35 now and even though he is very influential on the pitch, his legs are not the same anymore. Galtier relies on his players to press high as Neymar is doing since the start of the season. But the freedom the front three gets on the pitch is too much and can be fatal for PSG.
Even Christopher Galtier is not sure what his preferred attack is. Balague says:
“Well, when you got a very active Neymar and when you’ve got Mbappé, actions will happen upfront. It’s just that these three still don’t defend. And you cannot win things with three players not defending.”
Even sporting director Campos has admitted that it is a mistake of the past to have two players of the same position in one team. Clearly, the director was talking about Neymar and Messi.
