Liverpool given a boost in pursuit for dissatisfied RB Leipzig defender

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

The Reds are just one foot away from landing a much-needed defender. Liverpool who were already the favorites in landing Ibrahima Konate has been given an additional boost as the Frenchman is said to be unhappy with his current role at RB Leipzig.

Ibrahima Konate made his professional debut for Sochaux and was purchased by the German side for just £300,000. Die Roten Bullen have always been crafty when it comes to getting new players. They have always brought the best out of every player in their squad.

With talent and skill already oozing in the then 18-year-old defender, Leipzig had landed one of the hottest prospects of the generation. He has spent 4 years with the German side so far, with his contract set to expire in 2022. Konate has been a crucial part of that defence alongside Dayot Upamecano.

Gifted with an incredible height and strength, he has utilized it to its best. Moreover, he is incredibly fast for a man of his size. RB Leipzig has been benefiting out of that and it has been visible. Last year they made it to the Semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time.

Although they exited the competition early this season, they are currently 2nd in the Bundesliga with only 4 points separating them from the leaders, Bayern Munich. Their first fixture post-international break will be against them, which if they win, can close the gap to 1 point.

Ibrahima Konate departure to Liverpool a possibility

Ibrahima Konate was tipped to make a move to Liverpool with the pursuers said to have agreed to pay his release clause of £34 million. The Merseyside club were made clear that a centre-back signing is unavoidable after the injury curse they had on defenders this season. Because of which they have collapsed in the Premier League.

As of not having this problem the coming season, they have made signing a defender their priority. Many have been shortlisted, but Konate has been favored. He is expected to be their next Virgil van Djik but his injuries history can be a worry. It has also been reported that the player has completed the necessary medical check-ups for the switch.

Last month, Leipzig’s Sporting Director had made it clear that Ibrahima Konate will be staying at the club. Moreover, they are set to lose their main defender Upamecano who will be joining their rivals, Bayern as soon as the transfer window opens.

“I think that this is not an option for Ibu. He has a long contract with us – he knows what we mean to him and what he means to us.” – Leipzig’s Sporting Director.

But given the current relationship with the club, the Frenchman might opt for a move. His injury has been an issue. But after returning to full-fitness in February, he has featured only 40 minutes. He has also not started a game since December.
