Marcel Desaily thinks that Arsenal player Saliba is not extraordinary

PSG youngster duo Arsenal

Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly recently made surprising comments about the brilliance of Arsenal defender William Saliba. The Frenchman is one of Arsenal’s vital players and delivers exceptional performances since the start of last season. However, Desailly expressed reservations about his exceptional quality.

According to Marcel Desailly in an exclusive interview with ‘Get French Football News,’ he expressed his lack of conviction about William Saliba’s quality. The former French international opined that Saliba is playing at a high level. However, he is not above average and is not something extraordinary for Arsenal.

Certainly, to provide some background to these remarks, it’s worth noting that Saliba’s performances for his national team haven’t been as consistent as his displays for his club. Despite his excellent form with Arsenal, there have been criticisms of some of his outings with the French national team.

What did Desaily say about Saliba?

Desaily said:

“Then there is the one at Arsenal too [Saliba] – he hasn’t yet had the game time to adapt to that necessary association. I don’t believe his individual qualities to be above average. He’s at a very, very high level but not extraordinary.”

Saliba continues to impress in the current season for The Gunners. Hence, his absence was notably under observation when he was out against West Ham United last night. The defender has now solidified his status as one of Arsenal’s top performers, alongside players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Declan Rice.

While Desailly may harbor reservations about Saliba, the same cannot be said for Arsenal. Where the defender’s contributions are widely under recognition. On a different note, despite Arsenal’s overall performance last night, criticism is still towards Kai Havertz. Even in a less than stellar team display, Havertz continues to be a focal point for blame.
