Mario Gotze dreams of playing with Lionel Messi at Barcelona

World Cup winner Mario Gotze has opened up about his dream of playing with Lionel Messi. Revealing his intention to play at the top, the German hinted that Barcelona is a club he desires to play for. Gotze shared his thoughts with 11Freunde where he also talked about his chances to play for the German National side for the Euros.

No longer the golden boy of Germany, Gotze has had a tough time after his success at the 2014 World Cup. Multiple injuries and a rare metabolic illness meant that Gotze was never able to hit his peak. Gotze finally decided to move to PSV Eindhoven where he is having a decent season.

FALLEN TALENT

Mario Gotze started his career with Borussia Dortmund where he became part of Jurgen Klopp’s title-winning side. Being a versatile player, Gotze was often the go-to guy for Klopp. His performances attracted the big clubs and Bayern Munich was able to sign him in 2013.

In the next summer, he hit probably the peak of his career, scoring the winning goal in the FIFA World Cup Final against Argentina. However, the joy was followed by misery. He was never able to hit his top form as injuries and lack of game time hampered his development.

His ill-fated time at Bayern came to an end when he moved back to Borussia Dortmund in 2016. But he never hit his past heights. This alongside his metabolic illness meant that Gotze soon went from the first name on the team sheet to a bench warmer.

He made the conscious decision to make a move to the Netherlands as it was getting hard for him to find regular minutes. Signing for PSV Eindhoven in 2020, Gotze still has one more year in his contract. In the Eredivisie, Gotze has regained some form, however, his injuries seem to persist.

GOTZE WANTS TO PLAY WITH MESSI

In his interview, Gotze spoke about his dreams. He still hopes to play at the top level and wanted to play in the Champions League.

“To celebrate possession football with this [Barca] team, alongside Lionel Messi, that would be a dream “– Gotze.

He also admitted that he is ready to discuss with PSV on extending his contract beyond 2022, but with the condition that head coach Roger Schmidt remains at the club. Having expressed his intentions the German has opened the doors for any top clubs to take a punt at him.

Given his condition, it is going to be hard for Gotze to fulfil his dream of playing with Messi. Barcelona might not want to take a risk by signing the attacking midfielder who will turn 29 in June. Once dubbed as the “German Messi”, Gotze would have to produce something extraordinary next season to fulfill that dream.
