Messi has not signed a new contract with Paris Saint Germain

Lionel Messi is

In the end, Lionel Messi did not renew his contract with Paris Saint Germain. In the summer of 2021, the recently-crowned World Cup champion joined PSG after failing to find a new contract with his former club, FC Barcelona.

As a result, Messi left the Catalans on a free transfer after 20 years with the club. With Messi’s two-year contract at Parc des Princes, he will again become a free agent in the summer and can negotiate with whomever he wishes.

Recent reports indicate Messi has already agreed to sign a new contract with PSG. However, according to L’Equipe, Messi has not said “yes” to PSG’s offer, contrary to these claims. PSG club leadership are still awaiting his answer on whether he will stay on as their player beyond the 2022/2023 season. If accurate, there is a high chance of the Argentine going to Inter Miami or returning to Barcelona.

Barcelona president Laporta’s statement on potential Messi return

As the recent World Champion left in tears on his watch, president Joan Laporta has begun informing the media about the 34-year-old’s exit and potential return.

Laporta said:

“It’s obvious that as Barcelona’s president I would like him to return one day to Barça, I would love that.”

“But we can’t generate expectations. Messi is a PSG player, he has a contract with them. Messi just won the World Cup, Barca are delighted about that. But what I don’t want is to generate expectations [for something] that at the moment is hugely difficult.”

“Look, for us, Messi is the best player of all time. We had him here, he developed as a player here. I am convinced he has Barca in his heart and he supports the club. He will always be linked to Barca.”

“If he returns or not as a player? Right now he is a PSG player, we would really like it if he returned but we will see.”

Messi is currently enjoying his time in Paris but only time will tell if he will return to Camp Nou.
