Poor Michael Essien was all smiles when Ricardo Carvalho and Luka Modric posed for a photo with him. Essien appeared to be relieved that someone had shown up. Given their close relationship, Mourinho upset by the absences and had to console Michael Essien.

According to Rob Beasley’s book, “Jose Mourinho: Up Close and Personal,” he revealed:

“Mourinho said that Madrid was a political club with warring factions and told me a story about Essien inviting teammates to his 30th birthday but only a few turned up. He had to console Essien, saying it was nothing personal and that it didn’t mean the players didn’t like him but they simply were only concerned with themselves and had better things to do.”

Strangely, Zeppy Zep, Keeko, and Taco Hemingway recorded a song last year called “Michael Essien Birthday Party,” though we’re not sure if Essien himself will have heard it.

The Ghanaian international reached a significant life milestone as he turned 30 while playing at the Santiago Bernabeu. All of Real Madrid’s colleagues were invited to a party he was throwing. Only two players, out of the entire team, were present. Normally, a winning team has to be tightly connected. But during Jose Mourinho’s time at Real Madrid, that didn’t seem to be the case.
