Owen Coyle: – The man behind Jamshedpur FC’s league shield and Chennaiyin’s final in 2019

Owen Coyle has found himself in a name in the Indian Football circuit. He is known for bringing Chennaiyin FC from the bottom of the table to being the runners-up of that season. The coach has returned to the Marina Machans after three season to turn things around for them.

Owen Coyle: Playing Career

Coyle began his senior career with Dumbarton in 1985 where he played alongside his brothers. He signed for Airdrieonians in March 1990 for £175,000 transfer fee. This move was instantly successful as Coyle scored a hat-trick on his debut. And then went on to finish as the League’s top scorer for the season 1989-90. However, in October 1995, he signed for Dundee United for a £400,000 transfer fee, where he was once again part of a promotion-winning side, scoring the winning goal in extra time. He also represented the Republic of Ireland U-21 team. He went on to earn an international cap for the Republic of Ireland in a friendly game against Netherlands. On 15 November 2010, Coyle returned to playing action at the age of 44 for Bolton in their friendly match against Northern Ireland side Cliftonville.

Managerial Career

In April of 2005, Owen Coyle was the new manager of St.Johnstone. In March 2006, he was the Manager of the Month for the Scottish First Division for his team’s performance. Coyle signed a one-year extension to his contract with St Johnstone in July 2007, which would have kept him at the club until the end of the 2009–10 season. In the early part of the 2007–08 season, he led the team to the Scottish Challenge Cup Finale. Owen Coyle accepted an offer from Burnley in the week before the final and left the club.

Burnley, under Coyle, won promotion to the Premier League by beating Sheffield United 1- 0 in the Championship Play-off Final at Wimbledon stadium. The 2009–10 season was the first time Burnley had played in top tier of English football for 33 years. Coyle was appointed manager of Championship club Blackburn Rovers on a two-year contract on 2 June 2016. After thirty-seven games in charge, Coyle mutually parted ways with Blackburn Rovers. After that Chennaiyin appointed him as their head coach. Then the successive season he joined Jamshedpur FC. He helped them win their first ever trophy, ISL League Shield for the 2021-22 season.

In March 2022, Owen Coyle had returned to Scottish football after being appointed as the head coach of Queens Park FC. The team narrowly missed out on promotion to the Scottish Premiership in the 2022–23 season.

Chennaiyan FC hope to regain their past glory after bringing back their head coach.
