Player Profile: Prabhsukhan Singh Gill, the last defense of the Red and Gold Brigade

Since the first year of participating in the Hero Indian Super League, East Bengal has been suffering due to an ideal goalkeeper. Poor defence organization and an inept custodian were the main issues behind their recent failures. To fix this problem, East Bengal has signed promising young goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill on a multi-year deal.

Career Highlights: Prabhsukhan Singh Gill:

The 22-year-old young goalkeeper started his career at the AIFF Elite Academy. Later, he joined the Indian Arrows and played in the I-League for them. Then, Prabhsukhan Singh Gill joined ISL side Bengaluru FC but did not get much gametime under the bars.

Later, in 2020, Prabhsukhan joined another ISL side, the Kerala Blasters, on a two-year deal. Basically, he was signed as a backup to their first-choice goalie, Albino Gomes.

On December 5, 2021, Albino faced a big blow as he contracted an injury and was ruled out of action for an indefinite period of time. Then Prabhsukhan Singh Gill got a chance to showcase his abilities and soon became their first-choice goalie.

After spending three seasons with the Manjappada Brigade, Gill joined Kolkata-based East Bengal FC for a huge transfer fee. Gill, who signed a three-year contract with East Bengal, has become the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the Hero ISL.

Gill also took part in India’s age-based national football team and was also in the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup squad. Importantly, Gill is also in the squad for the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers, which are going to be held in September.

Career Stats:

Prabhsukhan Singh Gill has played a total of 33 games for the Indian Arrows in his two-year stint with the club. But the young goalkeeper played only two games for Bengaluru FC in the 2019–20 season.

The 2021–22 season, Gill’s second year at the Kerala Blasters, has been the breakout season for the young goalie. After Albino Gomez’s injury, Gill got a chance and grabbed it with both hands. Gill has put in a solid performance and emerged as one of the best young goalkeepers in the country.

Prabhsukhan Singh Gill played twenty matches that season and kept seven clean sheets, which helped him to win the Golden Gloves award of the 2021–22 ISL season. In the next season, Gill played 19 games for the Blasters. The Golden Gloves winner has made 47 saves in the 2021–22 season and 40 saves in the 2022–23 season.

Prabhsukhan Singh Gill ’s cat-like reflexes and fingertip saves will be very helpful for East Bengal in the upcoming years. The young custodian has the ability to boost the morale of the defense and lead the team from behind. His point-blank saves and excellent performances under pressure make him better than others in his position.
