SC East Bengal 2-1 FC Goa: Naorem helps East Bengal off the bottom

Football

SC East Bengal managed to win their first match of the season after sinking FC Goa with a 2-1 victory. The match was held at the JMC on Wednesday amidst a spike of Covid-19 cases. Both teams had a few positive cases amongst their squad but managed to put up a good show.

In these difficult times, the heart and bravery of the players must be appreciative. A valiant display from SC East Bengal helped them pip FC Goa with a narrow 2-1 win. The win lifted them from the bottom of the table to 10th place. Meanwhile, FC Goa continued to disappoint after falling short against an underwhelming East Bengal team. Their inconsistency has cost them a lot this season.

SC East Bengal 2-1 FC Goa: The Game

FC Goa began the game comfortably and managed to string quite a few passes together. East Bengal barely had a sniff of the ball in the first 7 minutes. However, a lapse of concentration from Edu Bedia saw him lose possession to Naorem Mahesh in their own half. With only the keeper to beat, Naorem made no mistake as he slotted home to give his team the lead against the run of play.

The Guars disappointed with their mistake, stepped up the tempo and committed their full-backs to their attacking play. However, this left them prone to counter attacks from the opposition. It was attack vs defense for the next few minutes as East Bengal were comfortable with FC Goa keeping of the ball.

Constant possession and pressure from FC Goa finally broke East Bengal’s resolve as they fell to a Noguera and Ortiz effort. Ortiz put Noguera through on goal who was sharp and converted to level things for Goa.

East Bengal responded right away by taking the lead once more in the very next minute. It was a mistake again from FC Goa, for which they paid dearly. Another pass intercepted by Naorem Mahesh set him through on goal and helped him bag his brace. The first half ended 2-1 in favor of the Red and Gold Brigade.

Second Half

FC Goa, furious with their mistakes, kicked off the second period with a lot of attacking intent. They were afforded quite a few chances but squandered them in front of goal. Goa should have had more but Ortiz fluffed his lines twice in the 54th and the 57th minute.

SC East Bengal managed to hold onto their 1-goal lead for the remaining minutes and finally picked their first 3 points of the season. It was a frustrating night for FC Goa, as their own mistakes ended up costing them the match. They had tons of possession but failed to capitalize on it and left the stadium with another loss.
