Ter Stegen might break LaLiga record for most clean sheets in a season

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, along with Robert Lewandowski, are likely the only regular starters eager to play against Celta Vigo next week. The Blaugrana will travel to a crowded Balaidos with survival on the line, but ter Stegen might have a record-breaking year.

Ter Stegen equals La Coruna’s record of 26 clean sheets

Ter Stegen recorded his 26th clean sheet of the season in Real Mallorca’s 3-0 victory. With Mallorca down to ten men early on, it was possibly the least he had done all season. It equals Deportivo La Coruna’s record of 26, set in 1993-94, according to MD.

The shot-stopper expressed pride in matching the record but hoped to get one better in Barcelona’s final game of the season. Speaking to Barca TV, he said:

“It is obvious that, if we look at the numbers, the season is extraordinary and historic. I have felt very good throughout the season, but I am also happy for my teammates. Achieving these numbers makes me very proud to play for a club like Barça”.

“Having achieved it makes me very happy; it was very difficult to achieve it. The last games we suffered a lot in defence, but in the end, the prize has arrived. Now, the goal is to overcome it. Once you are there, you have to attack it.”

If ter Stegen achieves another cleansheet against Celta, he will hold the record by himself. That will be a difficult task. The last time Barcelona played away from home, they were defeated 3-1 by Real Valladolid, and Celta are a team they have typically struggled against away from home. Furthermore, after clinching the league title against Espnayol, the Blaugrana allowed five goals in two games. Ter Stegen will request one last massive effort from his defence.

Barcelona fans have praised ter Stegen for his regular excellent performances this season, according to Sports Brief. Throughout the season, the German goalkeeper has put up some masterclass performances, saving numerous opposition chances. This has not gone unnoticed, with supporters all over social media praising Stegen for his role in Barcelona’s resounding La Liga victory.
