Bayern boss Nagelsmann hopeful on Goretzka situation

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann says he is confident about the contract situation of Leon Goretzka. The German was speaking in an interview with Sky Sports Germany.

Leon Goretzka only has one more year left in his contract with Bayern, and the Bundesliga champions are desperate to extend his contract. The midfielder however is reluctant to sign a renewal as is looking at other options.

However, the latest interview with Julian Nagelsmann shines positive news for Bayern. Nagelsmann said that he had a discussion with Goretzka and the player was happy to work with him.

THE TITAN IN THE MIDFIELD

Leon Goretzka has been an integral part of Bayern Munich ever since his move from Schalke. A strong presence in the midfield, the German is also an attacking threat, launching late runs into the opposition box.

He scored the important goals against Hungary in the Euro Cup to help Germany qualify from the Group stage to the knockouts.

In his 112 matches for Bayern in all competition, Goretzka has scored 25 times for them while assisting a further 27. He is a strong player who is good at passing and handling aerial threats. Predominantly playing in the centre of the midfield Goretzka has made an excellent partnership with his compatriot Joshua Kimmich.

Goretzka however has not signed a new contract with Bayern. He also changed his agent and has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga champions this season. Manchester United is said to be one of the sides that are interested in signing the 26-year-old.

GORETZKA ONE OF THE MANY ISSUES FOR BAYERN

“Yes, he’s up for FC Bayern, he’s up for the team. I think you can see that in the way he plays. It’s also quite normal for a player to always think about his future.”– said Nagelsmann. The interview has helped relieve some of the tensions for the Bayern faithful.

Bayern is increasingly facing the issue of securing the future of theirs players. David Alaba, Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng have all left the Allianz Arena on a free transfer this summer.

Both Leon Goretzka and Niklas Sule have their contracts ending in 2022 while there are issues in contract negotiations with Kinglsey Coman who is demanding a higher salary. Coman’s contract will end in 2023 alongside Joshua Kimmich and is a priority for Bayern to renew them.

All this meant that Bayern Munich are not in a good position at the moment. Add in the financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic the club will face difficulty in signing new players.

Hence priority for the Bayern hierarchy over the season will be to tie down their players and renewing the contract for Goretzka will be a good first step.
