Bayern monitoring Barcelona star Sergi Roberto

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Bayern Munich are linked with a move for Barcelona star Sergi Roberto. The German champions want to bring in the Spaniard for an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

This is according to Goal, who reports that Bayern are in contact with the players’ agent through an intermediary. Bayern are looking to reinforce the right-back position and considers Roberto as a good option.

Sergi Roberto is not the only option that Bayern are considering. The Bundesliga champions also consider Barcelona players Sergino Dest and Emerson Royal as alternatives and are also monitoring Sassuolo star Mert Mulder.

DESPERATE FOR A RIGHT-BACK

It is no secret that Bayern Munich are in search of a new right-back. Their current options Benjamin Pavard and Bouna Sarr have not been up to expectation last season. Thus a reinforcing the position is a priority for the club.

However, the pandemic have impacted the Bundesliga giants as they are not ready to spend big this summer. Thus Bayern are looking to bring in a cheaper option to cover this position and this search has led them to Spain.

Barcelona are currently undergoing a very difficult financial situation, with the cubs reportedly under massive debt. This means that they have to sell their player, in order to balance their books and to even sign new players. Right-back is a position where Barcelona have good depth and they could monetize the situation.

ROBERTO TO BAYERN, A GOOD DEAL FOR ALL PARTY

Sergi Roberto made his way through the Barcelona youth system and has been with the club ever since. He established his place in the senior team from the 2015/16 season and have been a mainstay. He famously scored the goal that helped Barcelona overcome PSG in the famous “Remontada”.

The Spaniard has played 304 times for the Blaugrana in all competitions and has scored 10 times for them. Sergi Roberto has been used in multiple positions for his club and was a utility man for his managers. Though he played more in the right-back position, he can also fill in the midfield.

The 29-year-old however has not featured much last season, appearing only 15 times in the league. His contract also expires in 2022 and Barca would not want to let him go for free. The lack of game time for Sergi Roberto and the financial woes of Barcelona means that a transfer to Bayern could be a good move for everyone.
