Real Madrid defied all odds last season as they lifted the Champions League for a record 14th time. Los Blancos had an absolute roller coaster ride on the way to the UCL title. Nobody had expected a Real Madrid squad with no Ronaldo to live in the Champions league and rule Europe. But they really proved why they are called the kings of Europe. The historical club made even more history as they also clinched the La Liga title in style. Karim Benzema was the top scorer in La Liga as well as the Champions League as he had a stellar season.
Karim Benzema was hands down the best player in the world last season. The Frenchman seemed to be on a level that nobody could reach last season. He was scoring goals for fun against the likes of PSG, Chelsea, and Manchester City. It was he who was the deciding factor in almost every knockout game for Real Madrid. It is no doubt that the Ballon D’or would have justice done to it only if Benzema lifts it this time. And sure enough, Benzema lifted the Ballon d’Or 2022 on 15th October and created history.
It was a stellar season that ended in the best possible way for Benzema and Real Madrid. Benzema was handed the Ballon d’Or by none other than his former manager Zinedine Zidane.
“I am like an older brother to Benzema, that’s what we like very well to call each other. He calls me my older brother and I call him: my little brother. We had almost the same path, he is from Lyon and I am from Marseille, but apart from this, we have many things that bring us together, even in our origins. His touch of the ball has always amazed me, it is wonderful in addition to his control. This is what allows him to start the attacks and the shots he makes.“
Zidane calls Benzema the ‘Best striker in french history’
Benzema’s former manager, Zinedine Zidane has also lauded praise on the Frenchman’s quality and why he deserved the award. Zidane managed Benzema for a total of 5 years. But it was his later stint in which Benzema took center stage and stepped up. Zidane and Benzema won 2 La Liga titles and 4 UCL titles together.
“The best striker in the history of French football? Everyone has their favourite player. Some people will tell you it’s Jean-Pierre Papin with his exceptional goals, others will talk about Michel Platini. For me, it’s Karim, yes, because I’ve been around him and I know what he’s worth. In any case, he deserves to be very high. I wish him to continue for a long time to go for records and to shine on the field, with Real Madrid and with the French team. “
