Borussia Dortmund interested in signing AC Milan attacker Leao

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Reports are emerging from Italy that AC Milan are looking to sell their Portuguese attacker Rafael Leao. According to Calciomercato Borussia Dortmund have registered their interest in Leao.

Leao made his move to Milan from France after impressing his time with Lille. The 22-year-old who is contracted to AC Milan till 2024, had a mixed season with his club.

The Rossoneri are willing to let him go this season if a good offer comes. Leao’s profile will fit a club like Borussia Dortmund who will surely have to find a replacement for Jadon Sancho.

IS LEAO THE IDEAL SIGNING FOR DORTMUND

Leao had a mixed season with AC Milan this time. While he started the first half of the season excellently, it was not able to be continued. This was also reflected in his team’s performance as AC Milan went from title favorites to finishing points behind their local rivals Inter Milan to finish second.

The Portuguese U21 player has appeared 61 times in Serie A for AC Milan. In this time he scored 12 and assisted for 8 goals. Playing as a centre-forward, Leao can also fill in at both the wings and also play as a second striker.

However, this could be a worry for Dortmund as his outputs do not match with their current stars. Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland have huge outputs. Haaland is an impressive goalscorer while Sancho is the chief creative outlet. Hence to bring in Leao to replace either of them might not be the best move.

DORTMUND COULD LOOK FOR ALTERNATIVES

Dortmund are most probably going to be selling Jadon Sancho to Manchester United this summer. The move is inching closer to completion. The only obstacle now for the transfer is United meeting Dortmund’s valuation of the player.

Haaland is also attracting interest from all the big clubs of Europe. While Dortmund have stated that they will not be selling him this summer, a huge offer could tempt them to sell the Norwegian. This a reason why Dortmund are already planning to bring in attacking reinforcement.

Leao however has not been as impressive as some of the other players on their shortlist. This includes the likes of Noni Madueke and Donyell Malen from PSV Eindhoven. Also, AC Milan also won’t be looking to sell him for cheap. The Italians have been prudent in the market lately and might give Leao another chance, with the club having limited attacking depth in its squad.
