Dortmund interested in Manchester United Goalkeeper

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Borussia Dortmund is looking at the possibility of signing Dean Henderson from Manchester United. Henderson’s future in Manchester seems to be hanging in balance with David de Gea still playing at the club.

Sky Sports have reported that Henderson will only stay at the club if he is the first-choice goalkeeper. With David de Gea starting the last week’s match against Fulham, doubts are raised about who will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s number one next season.

Borussia Dortmund is one of the clubs, that is interested in bringing the English shot-stopper. Fellow Premier League side Tottenham is also monitoring the situation alongside Chelsea and AC Milan.

WHY DOES BORUSSIA DORTMUND WANT DEAN HENDERSON?

Dortmund needs a goalkeeper. Roman Burki, who used to be the number one choice, have lost his place to Marwin Hitz during the middle of the season. Burki, though a decent option, is prone to errors. He makes regular mistakes which are often costly for the Black and Yellows.

Marwin Hitz on the other hand has been much better in the position but is not world-class. If Dortmund are to put on a proper title challenge next season, it is important to bring in a confident goalkeeper. Henderson has proven his worth during his loan period at Sheffield United.

This season Henderson has played only 12 matches in the Premier League for United. However, he has kept 5 clean sheets while conceding only 11 goals. Roman Burki on the other hand has appeared 18 times in Bundesliga this season for Dortmund. In this period he conceded 29 while keeping only 4 clean sheets. This has lead to Dortmund starting Hitz over him.

UNITED’S NUMBER 1?

The situation in Manchester United is difficult. Henderson has David de Gea ahead of him in the team. The Spaniard has been a vital player for United over the years. While his performance and consistency have taken a dip in the recent seasons, he is still an incredible goalkeeper.

Henderson did manage to replace de Gea in the starting 11 during the season, but the Spanish international has been getting more game time recently. Having played against Fulham in the Premier League, De Gea will most probably start in the Europa League final.

The lack of clarity in the first choice has become unsettling for both the players. De Gea is reported to be under the radar for multiple clubs. However, United has not yet decided on who their main choice would be. This has led to both the goalkeepers being anxious about their future. With De Gea fighting for his place in the Spain squad and Henderson hoping to be the England main choice keeper, they must play more consistently.

Thus for Henderson moving to Dortmund might not be a bad idea. The German side is regularly fighting for the titles and is present in the Champions League as well. With more players switching from England to Germany, Henderson could also decide to make the move. As for Dortmund, Henderson becomes a long-term option for a position that has been a weak point for them in the past few seasons.
