Erik ten Hag in line to become the next Manchester United boss

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Erik ten Hag is currently one of the favorites to take up the prestigious managerial post at Manchester United. Mauricio Pochettino was sounded out as the favorite once Solskjær was sacked in the month of November.

However, Pochettino’s failure at Paris Saint Germain recently has brought Ten Hag in the running. Manchester United’s current interim coach Ralf Rangnick will move upstairs to a directorial role come April since he was only appointed as a caretaker.

The race for the manager of one of the biggest clubs is wide open with both ten Hag and Pochettino as candidates.

Manchester United will be precautious with their next appointment after sacking 4 managers in 8 years. The club have lost their identity in the process and will want someone who regains the lost identity and plays attractive football.

Erik ten Hag is currently managing Ajax impressively in the Dutch league. They are currently top of the table with 51 points. They have scored 64 goals and have only conceded 5 goals in 20 matches and are favorites to win the title. Ajax also won all 6 matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage. ten Hag previously went on a winning spree with Ajax in the 18/19 UCL season. This season proved ten Hag’s credentials to be a top manager for the future.

Ajax reached the semi-final in that season and beat the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus on their way. The following season saw the likes of De Jong, Ziyech, and De Ligt move to the bigger clubs. However, ten Hag has since then done well to make up for the losses by promoting youth.

Pochettino or ten Hag who is more likely to land the Manchester United job

Mauricio Pochettino has an underwhelming record for PSG. He has only won 2 out of a possible 6 trophies. Meanwhile, ten Hag is overachieving for Ajax in the UCL. In accordance with recency bias, ten Hag seems to be the clear favorite for the job. Pochettino though has Premier League experience and knows how to manage the big stars in the sport.

Both have a good pedigree and excel in different ways. ten Hag though is touted as the next big thing in the manager market. A move for ten Hag makes more sense for the future. It will be no surprise if ten Hag is seen warming the manager’s chair at Manchester United come June.
