Fabrizio Romano has shared how much close Barcelona were to secure the services of Georginio Wijnaldum. The dutchman was free agent this summer after parting his ways from Liverpool. And with him being the free-agent some top clubs lined up to get his signature this season. Among those clubs were the Spanish giants Barcelona who needed to sign a new midfielder.

Barcelona made contact with the Wijnaldum and his agent and tabled an offer as the transfer market open. Both the Catalans and the dutchman made a verbal agreement about joining and signing contract, with agreeing on wages terms. Following that Barcelona started to work upon scheduling a medical and make a grand announcement of the signing.

But with the time passing by news started to emerge of Paris-Saint Germain’s interest in Wijnaldum. And a few days later it was PSG who won the race for signing the dutchman for free. As per the reports high wage offered by the French giants changed the mind Wijnaldum. And following the announcement of Wijnaldum to PSG, Barcelona felt betrayed both by the French side and the Dutchman.

Georginio Wijnaldum was one of the top priority for Barcelona as Ronald Koeman wanted a replacement for Sergio Busquets. Signing Wijnaldum, Koeman would have got familiar face from the Dutch team which he used to coach before signing for Barcelona. While there is no doubt how talent the 30-year-old is in the midfield with his runs and passing sense.

But now all that is dream after Paris Saint-Germain hijacked the deal of the dutchman from Barcelona. And due to financial problems, the Catalans couldn’t make any good midfield signings this summer. Playing with their same old midfield options as earlier season.
