Roshan Gopalkrishna(a renowned sports lawyer) advised Kerala Blasters FC on their compensation claim. The claim is under FIFA Club Protection Programme(CPP) for the long-term injury. The injury suffered by Sandesh Jhingan.

Jhingan missed the entire 2019-20 season with a knee injury. He picked up the injury during a practice match for the Indian national team. Match against Northeast United ahead of the national team’s World cup qualifiers. The 27-year-old twisted his knee in an off-the-ball incident. Which caused a rupture in his Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Which meant Jhingan would be out of action for months.

It was a big blow for the Blasters because Jhingan was their skipper and a rock-solid defender. He was also a well-paid member of the team. And they have to take care of his expenses including wages, whether he plays or not. So, the officials of Kerala Blasters received compensation from FIFA with the help of their protection plans.

Roshan GopalKrishna’s advise on the matterto Kerala Blasters

Roshan said that CPP provides compensation to football clubs under the FIFA Club protection Programme. And to qualify for the compensation the injury should have:

1.Occurred due to an accident in an official “a” class match, training/practice session. Associated with such match or time traveling and spent away from the club to participate in such a match.

2.Caused the player to be unavailable for more than 28 consecutive days.

The case of Jhingan qualified both the terms, so the Blasters successfully received the replacement from FIFA. The compensation is awarded as a daily pro-rata payment based on the player’s fixed salary from the football club for a maximum of 365 days and with a ceiling of EUR 20,548 per day.
