Borussia Dortmund confirms £88m deal for Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham has cemented himself as one of Europe’s best midfielders since joining Dortmund from Birmingham City for a £25 million fee in 2020. The 19-year-old caught the curiosity of numerous teams ahead of the summer transfer season, including Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United. However, Bellingham chose to sign a six-year contract with Madrid. Thus he could become the most expensive English footballer of all time if his transfer fee exceeds the £100 million Manchester City paid to recruit Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in 2021.
Bellingham had 28 goals and 27 assists in 132 games. He became the club’s youngest goalscorer in a competitive competition and the youngest Englishman to start a Champions League match. Jude Bellingham was named to the Bundesliga Team of the Season for Borussia Dortmund in 2020/21 and 2022/23. This year, he also won the Bundesliga Player of the Season title as Dortmund finished second to Bayern Munich. Bellingham has made an impact in international football in addition to the club level. So far, the 20-year-old has played 24 times for England, scoring one at the Qatar World Cup.
Real Madrid might sign another English international Harry Kane
Bellingham joins Laurie Cunningham, Steve McManaman, David Beckham, Michael Owen, and Jonathan Woodgate as the sixth English player to join Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Madrid could acquire a second England international this summer after declaring Harry Kane a priority goal following the departure of Karim Benzema to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad. Manchester United is also interested in Kane, who has one year left on his contract with Tottenham.
Liverpool had been competing hard to get Bellingham for the summer window. But dropped out in April due to the high expense of the transaction. Jurgen Klopp’s side are closing in on a £35 million deal for Brighton’s Alexis MacAllister. In addition they are also trying to bring in another new midfielder this summer.
