Lionel Messi has a chance to close in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally in Europe

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Last season, for the first time ever in football history, both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi transferred in the same transfer window. The Argentine signed for Paris Saint-Germain after his contract with Barcelona expired whereas the Portuguese returned to the ‘Theatre of Dreams‘.

Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo in an attempt to bring back success to Old Trafford. However, despite the goalscoring form of the Portuguese, the Red Devils failed to finish in the top 4. Paris Saint-Germain won the Ligue 1 title comfortably despite Lionel Messi’s lackluster season.

Both the superstars have had some terrific performances in the UEFA Champions League over the past decade. The goalscoring record of both these legends is par excellence. They are the only two players to have scored more than 100 goals in the European Competition. The tally is much ahead of the rest of their competitors and almost unmatchable. Cristiano Ronaldo is the top scorer with 141 goals to his name. Whereas Lionel Messi is second with 126 goals in his bag.

Cristiano Ronaldo could be eclipsed by Lionel Messi

Paris Saint-Germain are playing in the Champions League this season which means Lionel Messi will be competing in the European Competition yet again. However, for the first time ever in his career, Cristiano Ronaldo will not play in the Champions League.

Manchester United could only qualify for the UEFA Europa League last season. Due to this, the Portuguese superstar is forced to play in the tier 2 competition. Cristiano Ronaldo tried to force a move away from Old Trafford in an attempt to play Champions League football, however, no suitors were willing to avail his services.

This season is an opportunity for Lionel Messi to close in on the record and even eclipse it. If Paris Saint-Germain goes deep into the competition, Lionel Messi will get to play enough matches to at least come within a distance of the record. The little magician has started this season for the Parisians brightly and is looking at home. It will be interesting to see if the legendary rivalry takes a new turn this season!!
