Liverpool looking to strengthen their defense in January with a player from Brazil

Liverpool

According to a report from Alfredo Pedulla via Fichajes, Liverpool are keen on signing Fluminense defender Nino in the January transfer window. The Brazilian defender has so far impressed with his performances for Fluminense. He helped his side win the Copa Libertadores final and reach the final of the Club World Cup.

The report claims that Nino’s current contract runs until the end of 2024. He has a release clause of €7 million (£6m) in his contract, so he wouldn’t break the bank.

Liverpool need a player like Nino

With Joel Matip sidelined with an injury for the rest of the campaign, Klopp would certainly want to bring in a center-back. The Reds need to bring in a quality central defender next month and Nino could prove to be a quality acquisition.

Apart from his defensive qualities, the Brazilian could be a useful option while attacking set pieces. He has five goals and two assists to his name this year. Liverpool are currently fighting for the league title and they are on top of the Premier League table. Quality signings in January could help them go all the way in the competition.

At 26 years of age, Nino is in his prime years. He could make be a part of Liverpool’s defense for at least 5-6 years without needing time to develop.

Nino looks like a steal

The 26-year-old is at the peak of his powers right now and he would be tempted to move to the Premier League if there is a realistic offer on the table. If Liverpool are really interested in signing Nino in particular, only a better offer from some other club could get in the way.

The reported release clause would be a bargain for a club with Liverpool’s resources and the player certainly has the ability to justify the investment. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool decide to follow up on their interest with an official proposal to sign the defender, now that the transfer window is open.
