Manchester United add Luis Enrique to managerial shortlist

Manchester United have added Luis Enrique to their list of candidates for their next manager. Manchester United appointed Ralf Rangnick as the head coach in November. However, the German is only a caretaker manager and will move upstairs come summer.

The German will move to a consultancy role in the summer and leave the job of caretaker manager. United originally shortlisted Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino to their list of candidates. However, recent reports have suggested that former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is also being considered to replace Ole Soslkjaer as the full-time boss.

Luis Enrique the perfect fit for Manchester United?

Luis Enrique currently manages the Spanish National Team. He was signed by Spain to head their project after Spain were knocked out from the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Since Enrique’s appointment, Spain have been on the up. Enrique led Spain to the semifinals of the UEFA Euro 2020. They crashed out in the semi-finals against the winners Italy via penalties.

Enrique is known for promoting youth and handed debuts to Ansu Fati, Gavi, and Eric Garcia for Spain. He was also the manager of FC Barcelona for 3 seasons. During his time at Barcelona, he managed the famous trio of Messi, Neymar, and Suarez.

He won the sextuple with Barcelona in the 2015-2016 season winning 6/6 trophies. He left Barcelona after winning all that there was to win.

Luis Enrique returned to manage Spain after a 2-year sabbatical. Since then he has led Spain to the semifinal in the Euros and the final of UEFA Nations League. The average age of Spain’s team has been really young ever since Enrique took over.

Enrique’s belief in youth and his dominant tiki-taka style of play makes him a very strong and intelligent manager. However, luring him to Old Trafford will be a really difficult task for the United hierarchy. Enrique has made immense progress with Spain and it would take a bumper offer for him to leave his current job.

Spain are a team to look out for in the Qatar World Cup under Enrique’s leadership. United expects to keep tabs on Enrique’s situation with Spain. However, ten Hag or Pochettino are still favorites to take over the United job.
