Manchester United is interested in signing Edmond Tapsoba. The Bayer Leverkusen defender has been compared to many greats for his style of play. According to reports, the Red Devils have made him their priority signing for the upcoming season.
Edmond Tapsoba has been a great addition to the German side since his switch from the Portugal side, Vitoria de Guimaraes. He has gone through several youth clubs before settling at the Portuguese youth side.
Edmond Tapsoba was brought by Bayer Leverkusen at the start of this season for £16 million. He has been a rock along with Jonathan Tah at the heart of the team’s defense. Standing at 6’4 inches, he has been compared with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as a fearless player and has also been linked with them too.
Manchester United will be hoping to land him as their defensive woes keep increasing. They are currently 2nd and are 14th points behind the leader Manchester City. Although it is not looking possible to win the league, they will have to fight to keep their current position intact.
Edmond Tapsoba can solve the problem at Manchester United
The Red Devils have been very disappointing defensively. Their £80 million defender has not been able to live up to the mark. Although they will not be sidelining him because of his price tag, they will look to bring in someone who can partner him to a strong partnership.
Their options in Axel Tuanzebe, Eric Bailly, and Victor Lindelof have failed to cement themselves for the position. Although they perform well, they have not been able to perform it consistently. Eric Bailly has not renewed his contract yet and is looking for a move away from the club.
They have got some marquee names on their shortlist. Raphael Varane who is said to leave Real Madrid and who is also a long-time target for the Red Devils will be considered.
In fresh faces, Sevilla’s Ibrahima Konate has also been targeted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But their strongest link is with Villareal’s Pau Torres. He has been seen as the perfect partner for Harry Maguire and could move to Old Trafford if things go well.
Bayer Leverkusen not letting go of Edmond Tapsoba easily
Leverkusen is unwilling to let go of their star defender. Their season has been a great one to start with, but this year has broken their hopes to win the Bundesliga. They were on the top of the league till December.
Since then, they have been on a downfall. They have won only 3 games out of the 17 played. They have also dropped to 6th position with a Champions League spot also looking bleak. Given the current scenario of their team, they will not want to let go of a part of the 3rd best defensive side.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all that Eddy’s qualities have aroused interest from other clubs. But the player is not for sale. It would take an indecently-large offer for us to change our stance on the matter.” – Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes.
But they never said no. In case a club wants him, they must be ready to spend big. According to Simon, a bid like Kai Havertz should be made if the star defender has to leave Bayer. A bid of more than £70 million must be made by Manchester United if they want to land Edmond Tapsoba.
