Manchester United takes a massive step toward De Jong

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Manchester United reportedly have taken a massive step toward signing Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona. The English side had reached full agreement with Barcelona regarding the transfer of the Dutchman. But De Jong has been unwilling to move to Old Trafford. The 25-year-old is wanting to succeed at his dream club amidst all the chaos that has been there.

But now it seems that Manchester United might just be able to convince De Jong to join them. Even though Frenkie sees United as a downgrade from Barcelona, Erik Ten Hag can convince his former player to join him. He is the main target of the Red Devils this summer but has been really adamant about staying at Camp Nou. Barcelona meanwhile has been really confused on their stance regarding Frenkie.

On one hand, the club needs him to stay for sporting reasons. But the financial aspects do not allow De Jong to stay unless he reduces his wages. The Dutchman already reduced his wages in 2020 during COVID and has no intention to do so now. Barcelona also owes a massive chunk of money in form of deferred wages to him. Manchester United has reportedly agreed to give De Jong the highest salary, as well as pay, is deferred wages.

Ten Hag has already communicated to him that he will be the marquee signing in midfield. The former Ajax Boss is not at all convinced with the current CDMs present at the club. But Frenkie has no wish to play for a Europa League club and feels comfortable in Barcelona.

De Jong to play CB for Barcelona?

If indeed Frenkie De Jong ends up staying, his position is still unknown. Xavi has addressed questions several times about what is De Jong’s best position. The Spanish coach was not shy to admit that De Jong has world-class ball-playing abilities and can be one of the best ball-playing Centre backs. The surplus of options in midfield also makes it difficult for Frenkie to see where he will play.

Sergio Busquets has Nico Gonzalez and Pjanic as his backups. Then Barca have Pedri and Gavi, one of whom will always start. New signing Kessie provides some solid strength in midfield and has already impressed Xavi. Sergi Roberto is also an option from the bench. All these options just make it all the more confusing for De Jong and if he does have a future at this club. His quality is unmatched and maybe a reunion with Ten Hag can skyrocket his career once again.
