Mohun Bagan Supergiants got their 2023-24 AFC Cup campaign off to a winning start with a 3-1 victory over Machhindra FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday. The Mariners dominated the match from start to finish and created several chances, but they had to wait until the 40th minute to break the deadlock. Mohun Bagan doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Ali scored again, this time from a free-kick. Cummings sealed the win in the 80th minute with a cool finish.

Anwar Ali was the star of the show for Mohun Bagan, scoring two goals to help his side to victory. The young Indian defender was dominant in the air and also showed good composure on the ball.
Ali’s first goal came in the 40th minute when he headed home a Hugo Boumous corner. His second goal was even better, as he curled a free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Mohun Bagan was the better team throughout the match and deserved their victory. They created a number of chances and could have scored more goals.
The Mariners were particularly impressive in the first half when they pinned Machhindra FC back in their own half for long periods. They were also solid defensively, keeping their opponents to just one shot on target.

Things became uncomfortable for the Kolkata giants when Machhindra FC began to string together a few opportunities and scored in the 78th minute on a tremendous left-footed freekick from Pierre Jean Oloumou that sailed into the top-right corner. Juan Ferrando’s team responded effectively to the goal, pressing forward rather than sitting back in an attempt to reclaim control of the game. Anwar Ali scored his second goal of the night in the 86th minute, heading in a Petratos free-kick to put the game out of reach.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant advanced to the AFC Cup South Zone Play-off, where they will meet Abahani Limited Dhaka on August 22.
