Newcastle United has reportedly tried the signing of Aleksandr Golovin from Monaco during the transfer window in January.
By now, it should not be a secret anymore that Rafael Benitez always wanted to sign the Russian wunderkind. The Newcastle boss isn’t the only one who sought and failed to sign a player who came into the spotlight during the 2018 World Cup.
Newcastle was turned down a £34 million offer
Monaco rejected a £34 million approach from the PIF-owned club, according to Championat, a Russian sports news source.
Golovin’s representative would comment on the statistics in question, but he did clarify that claims that his client which is based on principality may have ended up with Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, and others in Eddie Howe’s team were accurate.
Agent Alexander Klyuev’s take
Golovin’s agent also stated that the World Cup quarter-finalist would definitely be looking forward to taking up a new challenge. He said, depending on the situation the player might join the Premier League someday. But as of now, nothing is off-track and the player does not see a transfer from Monaco.
“The rumors are definitely not fake. The talks between Monaco and Newcastle on Sasha Golovin happened in January, “
agent Klyuev stated in a press meet.
“We don’t even consider a return to the Russian Premier League. More England or Spain. Also, we had offers from clubs from there,”
he added.
Golovin did not rush his move to Monaco, but he has begun to live up to those great standards in recent days. The ambidextrous writer shone for Nico Kovac’s side, swooping down to win Ligue 1 in 2021/22 and then adding an astounding nine contributions in his last stay.
Should Newcastle sign Golovin this Summer?
The English club recently went through a take-over by the Saudi-operated Public Investment Fund. This paved way for signing players on a windfall no matter how much the asking price is. Newcastle must try for other players who are on the market rather than trying to force one individual against his will.
However, the club manager Rafa Benitez will definitely be open to trying and signing various players across the globe. All he has to do is look into the club’s pockets and reach out for a pen and a paper to talk details.
