Andriy Lunin, the Ukrainian international goalkeeper, was given a chance to start for Real Madrid in their recent match against Girona. This opportunity came about after their first-choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, was unable to travel to Catalonia due to gastroenteritis.
Despite the poor performance, Lunin has not had many opportunities to play for Real Madrid. He had mostly been there as a backup to Courtois. It is also worth mentioning that Castellanos is a talented striker who has been in good form for Girona recently. He scored eight goals in his last six games.
According to Mario Cortegana’s report in The Athletic, Real Madrid’s coaching staff long harboured doubts about Andriy Lunin’s abilities. Thus his performance against Girona on Tuesday did not come as a surprise to them.
What does Real Madrid coaching stuff think about Lunin?
Real Madrid’s coaching staff has concerns that Andriy Lunin has not been taking on board- prescribed key points. He got information of certain areas of weakness in his game, such as his distribution and game management. But the coaches feel that Lunin failed to make improvements.
The club board has interest in renewing Lunin’s contract. However, the coaching staff have reservations about the goalkeeper’s willingness to improve and take on new ideas. They view him as someone who is set in his ways and has not fully addressed the areas of weakness in his game. However, Lunin is keen on staying with the club beyond the expiration of his contract next year.
It will be interesting to see how Real Madrid handles the situation with Lunin. While the club board is reportedly keen on renewing his contract, the coaching staff’s doubts about the goalkeeper could play a significant role in their decision. If Lunin is not renewed, Real Madrid could risk losing him for free next year. However, if they do renew his contract, it remains to see if Lunin can address the concerns that have been raising about his game.
