Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman failed the Bayern Munich test again as the Catalans lost 3-0 to the German side in the Champions League opener. This is the first time in many years, Barcelona started their Champions League campaign without Lionel Messi in the team. And we clearly saw how the Catalans missed their little magician as they were thrashed by Bayern Munich.

Coming into the game the Barcelona already looked feared as Bayern toyed with them in the 2019/20 Champions League quarter-final. The German got past the Catalans 8 times as the full-time score was 8-2. And now facing again in the group stage of 2021/22, Barcelona seemed to remember those haunting memories.

However, despite that 8-2 result earlier, Koeman backed his team this time saying they would give trouble to Bayern Munich. But that was not at all the case as Bayern again thrashed the struggling Barcelona by a 3-0 scoreline last night. And this is first time in 24 years that Barcelona have lost their opening game of the Champions League campaign.

Barcelona was not seen as confident in the pitch as their shoulders were down while Bayern outplayed them. The German side taking advantage of the situation scored three goals; with Robert Lewandowski scoring a brace and Thomas Muller scoring one.

Following Barcelona’s poor squad depth Koeman had to play three youngsters who just got their promotion from the B team. And on a serious note, those three young players had the best performance compared to the other Catalan players. Following Barcelona’s defeat against Bayern Munich, Koeman has again played in the Champions League test. And now it seems that it’s going to be a very long season for the players and the Catalans fans.
