This summer’s quest for a new defensive midfielder by Barcelona has led to considerable consternation. The coaching staff, lead by Xavi Hernandez, has sought a number of top-tier players, including Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich. However, due to the club’s financial condition, neither of the two appears to be a feasible option for Barça.

Barcelona might sign Ruben Neves as a new pivot midfielder

With so much uncertainty, Gerard Romero believes Barcelona will make an effort for signing Ruben Neves. The Spanish journalist even feels that the Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder will join Barça ‘sooner or later’. There is no doubt that club president Joan Laporta has a great relationship with Neves’ agent, Jorge Mendes. The Portuguese has previously ensured Barça that he can arrange a deal for the Wolves star this summer. Laporta has elevated Neves as the ideal replacement for Busquets, although he has been held back at times by Barcelona’s coaching staff, with Xavi questioning the player’s defensive prowess.

However, as the Catalans’ options dwindle, Neves may be the last remedy. Despite the coaching staff’s hesitation, the Portuguese international has a solid reputation, having made over 250 appearances for Wolves since signing in 2017. The 26-year-old is highly renowned for his technical skills as well as his tenacity. He also boasts a vicious right foot, making him a long-range threat. Even with Mendes’ assistance, funding a move for Neves could be difficult for Barcelona. Wolves have stated that they are not interested in a player-plus-cash trade and will only consider a cash offer, which might complicate matters for the Blaugrana.

Neves has appeared in 253 games with Wolves, scoring 30 goals. According to AS, all parties have achieved an agreement on a transfer, and a transaction of £26 million is possible. As a result, it will be intriguing to observe what happens in the following weeks and whether Neves actually becomes a Barcelona player next season.
