Tottenham Hotspur interested in signing Nicolas Gonzalez

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Tottenham Hotspur have ignited an interest in VfB Stuttgart striker, Nicolas Gonzalez. The 22-year-old Argentinian winger has been linked with Spurs after their current winger, Gareth Bale confirmed that he will be returning back to Real Madrid after the loan spell ends.

Nikolas Gonzalez started his football career in his hometown itself. He joined Argentinos Juniors at the age of 7. He spent over a decade at the youth side before he made his professional debut for the same club in 2016. The first season there saw him make 20 appearances and score 4 goals.

His efforts were equally important as the club was able to get promoted from Primera B to Primera Division. He ended the season with 7 goals, before moving to the German Bundesliga. Stuttgart signed Nikolas Gonzalez in 2018 on a 5-year deal. Despite the club’s downfall and relegation, he kept giving his best.

They are currently 9th in the Bundesliga and are 4 points behind a Europa League spot. Gonzalez’s suitors, on the other hand, are not in a great state either. They had the perfect start to the season with lots of goals and leading the Premier League table.

Somehow, somewhere it went wrong for them and they have dropped a lot of ground. They sit 6th in the league and are 4 points behind a Champions League spot.

Tottenham Hotspur to replace Bale with Gonzalez

Gareth Bale had made a dream return to Spurs after not getting enough playtime at Real Madrid. He hasn’t been at his complete best, but he picked up form later in the season. Fans were hoping to see their former player make the switch permanent, only to get disappointed by the player himself.

“I think the main reason I came to Spurs this year was to play football first and foremost. Going into the Euros I wanted to be match-fit. The original plan was to do a season at Spurs and after the Euros still have a year left at Real Madrid. My plan is to go back, that’s as far I have planned.” – Gareth Bale when asked about his future.

This was definitely a stab in the back for the fans as well as Tottenham as they expected more from him.

This is not the first time Tottenham have shown interest in signing Gonzalez. He was pursued by them in January but the deal did not progress further from interest.

However, things will be different coming summer. They will be without Gareth Bale who will return back to Spain. Jose Mourinho is also an admirer of Nikolas Gonzalez as his raw talent has got the ‘Special One’ fascinated.

Gonzalez has been injured multiple times this season but has still managed to be involved in 8 goals in just 15 appearances. If Tottenham Hotspur were to land him, a sum of £27 million might just be enough to lure him from Stuttgart.
