Worry for Barcelona as Gavi might leave the club after contract suspension

Julian Araujo

In recent years, Gavi has proven to be one of the most gifted young individuals worldwide. At the young age of 17, Gavi made his debut for Barcelona, and in the 2021/22 season, he emerged as a prominent midfielder.

Over the past few years, he continuously improved his performance and solidified his position as a crucial player for both his club and national team. In September of last year, Barcelona was eager to secure Gavi’s services for the long haul. Hence, they succeeded in doing so after signing him to a new contract until 2026.

Initially, La Liga refused to approve the deal as they contended that the Catalans exceeded their spending limit. Barcelona file a case against the decision. In January, a court ruled in their favor, ordering La Liga to allow Gavi’s registration.

What did La Liga statement say about Barcelona?

However, the court have now overturned their decision since Barcelona filed the lawsuit after the deadline. La Liga official statement said:

“LaLiga received a notification from the 10th Commercial Court of Barcelona informing of the lifting of the precautionary measures agreed in the Gavi case.”

“The reason being Barcelona’s failure to comply with the deadlines set for the filing of the main lawsuit.”

Reportedly, the club has denied missing any deadlines and plans to appeal the court’s decision.

Fortunately, Gavi will still be able to play for Barcelona for the remainder of the season. However, there is a risk that his senior contract may be nullified again. This could result in him becoming a free agent in June.

La Liga stated that Barcelona must cut their budget by £177m before they can make any additional signings or register Gavi’s contract. Therefore, until they accomplish this, Gavi’s contract cannot be registered.

Losing Gavi on a free transfer would be a catastrophe for Barcelona. Hence, they will undoubtedly do everything within their power to retain him at the club.
