Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has dismissed speculation about a potential transfer of Frenkie De Jong to Manchester United.
The Dutchman joined the Catalan giants back in 2019 from Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam for a fee of around €75 million. Since joining Camp Nou, the 24-years-old has displayed productive performances and established himself as a starter.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has announced Erik ten Hag will be succeeding Ralf Rangnick at the Old Trafford stadium from next season. And following the Dutchman’s appointment, reports have started to gather pace as the Ajax boss wants to reunite with his compatriot at the record Premier League champions.
However, speaking in the press (via Sports), Xavi stressed that Frenkie De Jong will stay in Barcelona. The midfielder will have a big role to play for the Spaniard next season. Xavi said:
“He is a very important player for me, for the club and for the team. Due to his quality and conditions, he should mark an era at the club. He is at a very good level since I arrived and he has to continue scoring goals, assisting, being the protagonist. He could be one of the best midfielders in the world. If it were up to me, he would continue here for many more years.”
Can Manchester United sign Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona?
Frenkie De Jong will be a great acquisition for Manchester United if the club’s hierarchy were to sign the midfielder in the summer transfer window. However, the 24-years-old will not be a cheap option for the Red Devils. Meanwhile, the Catalan giants will ask for a fee of around €70 million for their star man.
The Netherlands international joined the Camp Nou stadium as a successor of Sergio Busquets in the holding midfielder position. However, the 24-years-old has failed to stamp his authority in the holding midfield position. Meanwhile, the Spanish midfielder continues to serve Barcelona.
Therefore, De Jong is playing the out of position in the more advanced role. But, he could play in the preferred holding midfielder role at Manchester United should he join the Premier League giants. However, the Dutchman might not want to sign for the Red Devils, given they are looking likely to miss out on qualifying for the Champions League.
